Computing Resources Committee Announcements
September 2001:
- Click here for information on setting up your DNS
numbers on CS department machines. Everyone should be using the university's
name servers.
- CRC is soliciting ideas for the computing infrastructure portion of the
department's strategic plan. Contact Roger
Ehrich with any ideas or suggestions.
June 2001:
- All accounts on espresso.cs.vt.edu have been reenabled and new
applications have been installed. Contact Vince
Rivellino for more information.
May 2001:
- A new printer has been installed in the mailroom. Click
here for more information on printing from Windows, Macintosh, and UNIX
platforms.
- Brian Maloney may be contacted after hours (in an emergency) at (540)
230-8340.
April 2001:
- CRC is soliciting equipment requests for the Equipment Trust Fund list for
2001-2002. Please email any requests to ehrich@cs.vt.edu.
CRC will prioritize the requests and submit this list to the department.
- The technical staff is addressing the problem of failed mice on machines
in the graduate lab and in room 133. All machines will receive new mice as a
first step in this process.
- Vince Rivellino is officially joining the technical staff beginning May
18. His duties involve support for UNIX machines in the department. Welcome,
Vince!
- CRC is investigating the need for increased education for faculty,
students, and staff on the topic of repetitive stress injuries.
- The departmental news server will be officially taken offline very soon.
Those desiring to read news should use the university news server at
news.vt.edu.
- Brian Maloney is beginning a pilot
program for the backup of faculty office machines running Windows 2000 or
Windows NT 4.0.
- The online problem reporting system will no longer be used. Instead,
simply send an email to techstaff@cs.vt.edu
describing your problem. Everyone on the technical support staff will
receive a copy of the message, and the appropriate person will initiate a
response to the problem.
- A matrix
showing current technical staff duties is online. Use this to contact
someone directly about a computing problem.
- The undergraduate
computer requirements have been updated for 2001-2002.
