How to Set Your Domain Name Server (DNS) Numbers for CS Department Machines

The CS department nameserver has been shut down. Please be sure that your workstation is configured to use Tech's DNS servers.

For Windows 2000 machines:

  1. Click on: Start -> Settings -> Network & Dial-up Connections
  2. Right-click on the "Local Area Connection" and choose "Properties"
  3. Highlight "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and Click on the "Properties" Button
  4. Make sure 198.82.247.66 and 198.82.247.98 are in the two text boxes at the bottom ("Preferred DNS server" and "Alternate DNS server").
  5. Click OK
  6. Click OK
  7. Close the "Network and Dial-up Connections" window.

IF BRIAN SET UP YOUR WORKSTATION THEN YOU DO NOT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THIS. He configured your DNS settings to use Tech's DNS servers. Also, any windows 2000 machines he added to the windows 2000 domain are already set up to use the Windows 2000 Campus Dynamic DNS servers: 198.82.162.237 and 198.82.237.7. You should leave these settings in place if you have them.

For UNIX machines:

Make sure your /etc/resolv.conf file looks similar to this:

search cs.vt.edu
nameserver 198.82.247.66
nameserver 198.82.247.98
nameserver 198.82.247.34

Of course, if you have no idea what the above is talking about, feel free to email techstaff@cs.vt.edu and we'll make sure your workstation is configured correctly.
